What If the Biggest Solar Storm on Record Happened Today?

When a CME hits, the solar particles can interact with Earth's magnetic field to produce powerful electromagnetic fluctu

The Carrington Event was a powerful geomagnetic storm on 1–2 September 1859, during solar cycle 10 (1855–1867). A solar coronal mass ejection (CME) hit Earth's magnetosphere and induced the largest geomagnetic storm on record. The associated "white light flare" in the solar photosphere was observed and recorded by British astronomers Richard Carrington and Richard Hodgson. The storm cre…

What is the Carrington Event? Starting August 28th, 1859, for several days, our sun was busy. Astronomers viewed numerous sunspots and evidence of considerable magnetic activity. But, this was only a prelude to much larger ‘events’, starting with a large coronal mass ejection (or CME) which hit earth on September 1st.

The Carrington Event (2013) - IMDb

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2247254

May 11, 2013 · The Carrington Event: Directed by Rob Underhill. With Rusty Martin Sr., Katie Garfield, Chris Marrone, W. Scott Parker III. News of a massive solar flare goes viral. Soon after, the power is out. Phone's dead. Water taps are dry. Radio is static. Days pass with no news, just people getting more crazy. A week later the fight for survival has already begun.

Oct 05, 2020 · In a Carrington Event, these waves of particles can be so massive that they take up half of the volume of space between the Earth and the Sun, some 93 million miles. CMEs this big can eject up to a billion tons of plasma into space.
